Our students in Brooks were able to attend an Education Liason Association of Alberta information fair hosted by St Joseph’s Collegiate . They got to learn about post secondary programs for trades , degree programs and opportunities with the Canadian military . Representatives from approximately 15 colleges and university were there. It helps students to understand their options, set goals and plan for the future . It is time for an introduction! Last June we said, farewell to one of our beloved teachers, and while he left big shoes to fill, our team of administrators found the perfect fit! Sarah Spackman comes to us from St. Mary’s school in Okotoks, and she has over two decades of experience! She comes from the elementary space, but she has not let high school intimidate her for one minute! She is prepared. She is professional. She’s a masterful presenter, and the best part is, she’s just so excited to get to know our students! Here at St. Luke’s we offer a unique opportunity for young people to be educated in an alternative way. We teach some live classes. We utilize Centre For Learning At Home and their online classes, and we do hybrid classes where the incredible teachers at CFL lead the class, but our teachers facilitate and tutor and keep everyone on track. Sarah joined our High River team of two. That’s right two teachers teaching all subjects to all grade levels, and she hasn’t faltered for a second! St. Luke’s family, please welcome Sarah into our fold. She is here for all the right reasons, and she’s gonna be a huge support to so many students. Today students from our High River campus took a walk to honour Terry Fox and the legacy he left behind. Terry had the goal to run across Canada and raise one dollar for every Canadian to support cancer research. At the time, the population of Canada was 24 million people. His goal of raising $24 million dollars led to the Terry Fox foundation hitting the billion dollar milestone this February. Today we also walked to the river because as we learned about Terry Fox, we talked about the ripple effect of that one walk. While the Terry Fox foundation can account for $1 billion raised for cancer research, it is impossible to measure the different walks and fundraisers and cancer research that was inspired by Terry’s Marathon of Hope. The annual Terry Fox run inspired countless national and international walks, hikes and cross-country journeys, for charities around the world. Yesterday, many of our St.Luke’s Outreach Brooks students participated in the annual “Brooks Citizens Walk About” to celebrate people with disabilities in our community. It was another beautiful celebration of inclusion and community again this year . Today , our Broloks students participated in a cross curricular - PE and Science trip to Dinosaur UNESCO world heritage site. We were able to see a dinosaur bone bed where active research is happening, touch and hold a 75 million year old fossil, compete a three hour hike and the best part- we bonded as a community. We are so thankful for such an awesome day and the beauty to be experienced in Newell County. It was an incredible way to kick off a new school year! On this first day of class for the the 2026-2027 school year, we need to welcome our newest member of the St. Luke’s family! Our very own Keara Henry is not only a former St. Luke’s student, she is our beloved Family School Liaison Worker. Holten Shaun Robert Henry joined the world on August 13th and we know he is the best hands! Keara is gonna spend the year at home being the very best mom to “Holt”! What a lucky baby! As we close the year, it is also time to say goodbye to one of our beloved teachers. Mr. Bryant Hurst came to St. Luke’s in 2011, and after 15 years of doing everything humanly possible to serve the youth in our communities, he and his wife are exploring new opportunities in Northern Alberta. In his time here, Hurst became known for his kindness, his compassion, his ability to connect with people and his incredible sense of humour! He is patient, smart, and he believes everybody deserves multiple chances. He’s not only an incredible teacher, he is a devoted father of four boys, a supportive husband and an avid sportsman. He loves the outdoors, soccer, basketball, and any hockey game that involves one of his four sons. Some of his favourite memories at St. Luke’s will be getting the students out to play sports, hiking in Kananaskis, ski trips, and camp. He loves his day-to-day conversations with students, but he really loved being able to experience the world with them. Mr. Hurst was a formidable leader here at St. Luke’s. He always had time to chat and connect with kids. He was an incredible example for countless students over his 15 year career here. He also made the teachers around him better. He understood our motto. Leave not one heart behind. He treated every student that came through our doors with dignity and respect. While we will definitely miss him, we know that whoever gets the pleasure and honour of working with him in the future, they will be incredibly blessed. Well, we aren’t sure if this textbook was hidden in a giant pocket, or if Sawyer just thought the Social curriculum could use a little clean up, but there were no germs present at this Social Studies study session! Last Friday was the perfect day to get outside. Students from our Okotoks campus met up with students from our High River campus, and spent the morning at Brown Lowery! We got outside. We hiked. We had a fire. Mostly we just enjoyed the day together! Competitive, bright, hard working… these young ladies bring so much talent and dedication through our doors! Did you know it is Support Staff Appreciation week! Today, and every day, we want to thank all of our incredible support staff, and give a special shout out to Ms.Carol Faye, who has been with St. Luke’s since the early days. We know schools are better when students get quality support, and there is nothing that Carol can’t do! She supports math and science students daily, but she has also played many roles and wore many hats here at St. Luke’s! St. Luke’s Outreach is proud to celebrate Jade Boland on receiving the Christian Witness Award from Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools! Mrs. Boland lives the Gospel every day through her kindness, humility, and loving service to students and staff. She leads with grace, shares Christ’s love with joy, and reminds the school community what it means to be a faithful servant. We spent Wednesday afternoon learning some Coachella worthy hair skills in cosmetology class! Every year, Okotoks campus offers cosmetology as an option course, and it’s always a popular class! Hands-on learning, creative, and skills the students can use in their everyday life! Thank you to our guest instructor once again for coming in and making time for our students!
